PoPo Scanner
Research & Development
circa 1989 & 2016
This is my POC prototype "PoPo Scanner", using a mini pocket Windows computer, Software-defined radio (SDR), custom algorithm, software modifications, a broad Spectrum antenna, a Blue tooth antenna, a WiFi detector, blah, blah, blah...

History:
So back in the '80s, one of my favorite devices from childhood was a Radio Shack Multi-frequency Short & Long Wave analog manual radio. It was huge and had several degrees of fine-tuning so that you could discover weak but clear signals/voices. So when I would listen to the radio, I could mentally travel to China, CCCP, BBC, France, or listen to Morris Code and other non-descriptive languages on VHF, UHF, to enrich my understanding.
Since SmartPhones were not available in the '80s, I would have to memorize the frequencies and use manual tuning, so you could hope to reach the same station or broadcast station(s) the following evening.

KISS:
So being in High School, I would hear about students whose Families or friends got raided by the Police. So because these students seemed so traumatized by the Police, I came up with a KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) Popo-Scanner.
My POC (Proof Of Concept) device was just a Radio Shack analog spectrum radio- which measures the strength of specific radio frequencies. Since Law enforcement in the '80s used radios (with specific frequencies), as the Police would physically be getting closer to the house, the spectrum radio-meter would read the increase in radio "signal strength" and at a predetermined signal strength, it would cause the piezoelectric alarm to signal. :) This alarm would let people to know that the "Popo" or Government was in your area..., giving people who where about to be raided, at least a chance to finish using the toilet... lol :o

Reboot V 2.0
In 2015, I remembered my High School analog device and decided to "try" it again, but this time using "modern digital" technology. The result (below) was this Pocket Windows computer using FOSS Software-defined radio (SDR), custom algorithm, soft/hardware modifications, a broad Spectrum antenna, a Blue-tooth antenna, a WiFi detector, blah, blah, blah, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more, say no more... Lol

Curious...
What funny,
is that my modern digital V2.0 PoPo Scanner
did NOT rely on any high tech "hacking"
or complex signal deciphering,
as it was solely based on a passive
'detection algorithm'
which was derived from old
B2 Bomber stealth-tech!
lol
Happy Happy Joy Joy
:)
